Tough Decisions

It's been a while since we have given you an update on our infertile life...but today we have an update. It's not much but it's something. Dusty and I traveled to Las Vegas yesterday to meet with Dr. Daneshmund at the Fertility Center of Las Vegas. We had a consultation on in vitro fertilizaiton (IVF) and Dr. Daneshmund answered all of our questions about the procedure. We learned a lot more about the procedure of IVF and WOW...it's quite the process. Due to our insurances not covering ANY of the costs for IVF, this will be all out-of-pocket, with no payment plan available, which will make this very tough for us. So, if anyone knows where a money tree is, please let us know so we can go and pick $15,000 to pay for it.

Many people ask us, "what's the difference with insemination and in vitro"? Well, for those of you with that question..the two are very different. Insemination is a lot easier procedure. After some medication, ultrasound, and 1 injection, the doctor then injects semen directly into the uterus and you take a pregnancy test 2 weeks later. Plus, it is a lot cheaper. But since that didn't work for us, we move on to IVF. With IVF, there is a long prep before the implantation, along with medication, 10 injections (which alone cost 2k), blood work, ultrasounds and sonohysterogram. Once the prep work is complete, they take an egg out of the women, and get semen from the man, and they watch them attach in a petri dish in the lab (often times injecting the semen directly into the egg... which is more than likely what will have to happen due to Dusty's low motility). Once the sperm and egg form into an embryo, the doctor implants the embryo into the uterus for the baby to "hopefully" grow.

Dr. Daneshmend, along with Dr. Chalmers said that my daily chronic nausea is more than likely caused from endometriosis that may be present on a nerve, where it cannot be removed. If we get pregnant, it will more than likely help me get better and get rid of the chronic nausea. That alone is worth $13,000...I would pay more than that to not dry heave every morning and feel nauseous all day for no reason. So if we could "kill two birds with one stone" (getting pregnant and getting rid of the nausea) it will be totally worth every penny.

However, what are our chances of conceiving through IVF? It all depends on lots and LOTS of testing that they would perform on me to make sure I produce the right amount of eggs and to make sure I have an "environment" that is healthy to carry and grow a baby. Those tests alone cost a lot. Plus, there is still a possibility that it will not take and the IVF will fail. So...that's where Dusty and I are now. We have a lot of praying and thinking to do to decide what step we want to take next....it's a tough decision!
