Dusty and I went in for our weekly doctor appointment on Thursday, June 13th. We started out with an ultrasound measuring our baby boys. It had been about 5 weeks since they were last measured, so Dusty and I were guessing that they were probably about 3-3 1/2 lbs each. After they were measured, Dusty and I looked at each other in shock...Paxtin weighs 4.7 lbs, while Channing weighs 4.9 lbs. Our baby boys are growing so big and doing so well. They are in the 50% percentile for their measurements in a SINGLETON pregnancy...yes, not a twin pregnancy, but a singleton pregnancy. So needless to say, I have over 9 lbs of baby in my belly at 32 weeks pregnant! Another thing that was revealed during our ultrasound is that Paxtin's head is super low, which shot up red flags to the doctor, especially with all of the hard contractions I have been having.
After the ultrasound we went in a room for a cervical exam. I was now dilated to a 2 and 80% efface. The doctor could even feel Paxtin's head cause it is so low. All day, before and even at the doctors office, I had been having very hard contractions. The doctor was concerned after my exam, and with all the contractions I had been having ,he sent us right over to Labor & Delivery. Before we headed over there he discussed giving me Morphine to help calm my uterus to hopefully slow down the contractions, and also to help with all the pain I was in. So Dusty and I headed right over to Labor & Delivery and they got me all hooked up to the monitors, and an IV in my arm. My contractions were 2 minutes apart and still coming on very strong. After about an hour after the doctor had checked me at his office, the nurse checked me and I had dilated to a 3 and was fully effaced. They called the doctor to give him the update, telling us that our babies would more than likely make their arrival that day.
They finally administered the Morphine the doctor ordered into my IV, and after about 3-5 minutes I started coughing and my throat started to close, causing shortness of breath. They immediately had a doctor who was at the hospital come in to check me and my oxygen levels had dropped. They got an oxygen mask put on me and gave me Benadryl through my IV to counteract the Morphine. Morphine is now another medication on my "allergy" list of meds.
Once they got me breathing normal again, they got me up to get me moved from the monitoring room to a delivery room. When I stood to get in the wheelchair, I was bleeding. The nurses definitely thought our babies would be making their arrival. They got me all settled in to another room, and continued to monitor the babies heart rates and my contractions until the doctor arrived an hour or so later to talk to Dusty and I. He decided since the Morphine was definitely not the best option for me, that we would try a shot called Tributaline, which would also help slow my contractions. So that's what they did, the nurse came in and gave me the shot. After about 45 minutes my contractions started to slow down, and the doctor wanted to check me again to make sure that I hadn't dilated anymore and I hadn't. I was still at a 3 and fully effaced.
They kept me overnight to keep me monitored incase things changed throughout the night. The next day was spent laying in the hospital bed, with a throbbing back, and sporadic contractions (about 1 every 10 minutes). That evening the doctor returned to check me again. If I had dilated to a 4, they would keep me and we would proceed with labor by breaking my water and getting the epidural going, but I was still at a 3. The doctor was very hesitant to let me go home, but whereas we only live 5-10 minutes away from the hospital, he released me.
I came home Friday night, and since then I have had about 2 hours everyday where my contractions are no more than 5 minutes apart. We contemplate on whether to go to the hospital or not at that point, so we wait it out a bit longer, then they start to slow down. I must say I am not a fan of all of these false alarms. My body is physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. But I know the longer our baby boys spend in the womb, the healthier and better off they will be. The doctor told us today that for every 1 day they are in the womb, it's 2 days less they will have to spend in NICU. I will clench my teeth through any pain I have to go through for these babies as long as they are healthy and strong.
So here we are now, Monday June 17th, and I am at home with our baby boys still in my belly. It has definitely been an eventful weekend for Dusty and I. There is never a dull moment at our house anymore...
